Talk: Brunswick House Railway Institute - a story of collective self help on the railways

The arrival of the railway at Nine Elms in 1838 brought in its wake large numbers of skilled and semiskilled railway workers. Slowly they developed trade unions and social organisations. Parallel with this were the facilities provided by the railway company, particularly those at Brunswick House. From within what became the railwaymen’s own club house, Sean Creighton will explore the rich organisational life that supported local railway workers, especially that which took place at the Institute.
