Tarting up Tradescant Road: Saturday 2nd April 2010

Got any ideas for how we can improve the look of Tradescant Road?

We've got a "Community Freshview" slot booked for Saturday 2nd April.

What does that mean?

Community Freshview is (and I'm quoting here) an award-winning scheme that sees residents join forces with the council to makeover their local areas.:
Community Freshview is led by residents, it is your chance to make a difference to the environment in your local area. Whether you want to brighten up an area of green space, give a facelift to a disused area of land or any other activity that improves your local environment, we will help you do it.
If you belong to a community group or have volunteers who want to help improve the environment in your neighbourhood, we can help you by giving you equipment, expertise and some extra helping hands.
It's already booked up quite a long way in advance to I've taken the liberty of asking Lambeth Council to pencil in Saturday 2nd April (10am. All we need now is 9 more volunteers to take part.

If we can do that Lambeth will provide:
  • Two Lambeth officers for the event to advise and work alongside residents throughout the events.
  • Tools such as Wheelbarrows, Shovels, Forks, Rakes, Secateurs, Hedge Cutters, Pruners, Re-Usable Green Sacks (Oops!), Gloves etc
  • Paint for Street Furniture (bollards, railings etc), Painting of Front Walls, Garage Doors etc
  • Free Compost if required (Loose or Bagged not both)
  • 2-3 Skips dependant on need. One can be for Green waste only and the others General Waste.
  • They can provide free Scaffold Boards if required which can be used for Raised Beds/Edging etc
Lambeth collects all the waste and take it away.

Types of activities tackled as part of Community Freshviews
  • Hedge Cutting an General Plant Pruning’s Gardening
  • Clearance of Derelict Land areas and General Disposal of Unwanted or Dumped items
  • Painting of Street Furniture or Garden Walls, Fences, Garages etc
  • Provide additional help from Community Payback (Probation) if requested by Lead Rep and there is an area which the team can tackle (6 and 1 Supervisor)
  • Identify additional needs or service requirements/advice which need to be followed up with officers/departments (not able to tackle on the day)
What to do next
  • Are you interested in taking part? Can you do 2nd April? If so let me know through a comment or email andreworange [at] gmail.com
  • Have you got any ideas for work that needs doing? Leave a comment.

well, there are always some things to do:
    This is my little list:
Wall at the Stamford buildings needs a bit of attention (and painting) This little pathway is in a bad condition and any improvement will help. I guess 3 people can re-paint it in 3 hours max. Any volunteers?

There are some missing trees on Tradescant road - as there were damaged during the road-works.

It would be nice to have some big flower pods (or something similar) at the beginning of the road to visually divide the main road from the residential area. It can work better than the road bumps or unused bicycle stands or dust bins..

Space near the library can manage with some flowers as well..

  2. Thank you, Anyonymous, whoever you are! Please let us know!

    These are good ideas.

Other feedback I received included this:

"The Freshview scheme seems better adapted to areas with some public space that needs tending, than to our road where the only public space is the pavement. We can pick up the litter, perhaps plant a tree where one is missing, and then we need people's permission to do anything else, to which end we might:

    - go door go door promoting awareness of keeping the pavement free of bins
    - offer to clear out, clean front gardens
    - offer to repaint any white front garden wall or black fence"

Anyone else got any other ideas?

    Thanks.

I put 2nd April to my calendar and I am happy to join the community freshview.

I was wondering if you have list of the projects that have to be mended on the street.

I like the idea of planting the trees where missing on the street. And maybe to plant some Tradescania plants :)
Can this be paid by council? Or do we have to get other council bodies involved? Maybe Streetcare approval in advance?

I am getting fed up with our little "Stamford buildings" passage at the back of our houses. I called council couple of times to remove big graffitis (which they did) also unblock the drain, etc..
All the rubbish that use to land on Tradescant Road now ends there together with local youths. I was thinking that the street needs to be "claimed back" by the residents and the easiest way is to paint the wall all the way (approximately 12 meters) of the wall. Please find the attached panorama picture (it looks much longer on the picture than in reality). I briefly talked to some people who live on that passage and they were open to the suggestion of helping and spending few hours painting. I know that it is not the interest for the most of Tradescantians but maybe if there is no much more on the list.. Just food for thought.
