Introduction of a charge for bulky waste collections

Dear Ms Bourke

Re: " Introduction of a charge for bulky waste collections"

Worst. Idea. Ever.

We have spent years combating fly tipping in our street.

Our success has in part been due to being able to explain to people that Lambeth will pick up your mattresses, fridges, etc free of charge so there is no need to dump them at the corner of Tradescant Road and South Lambeth road.

Charging for bulky item collection will mean a return to habitual fly-tipping.

Could you please either:

(a) Explain how you will prevent the return of fly-tipping OR
(b) Let me know your address so that I can put up signs suggesting that the fly-tippers leave stuff outside your house instead of mine.

I'm so angry about this decision that I'm not going to type any more today. I'm seething.

Cordially,

Dear all

Lambeth’s recycling and refuse services are set to change significantly from April 4th 2011. These changes have been designed to benefit the environment, meet increasing financial pressures and contribute to achieving regional, national and EU targets for reducing and recycling waste.

Lambeth currently has a recycling rate of 27 per cent and whilst this places us ahead of several other inner London boroughs, a dramatic change in residents’ behaviour is needed to limit both the impact of spiralling waste disposal costs and the impact of waste management on the environment.

Following consultation with residents, the new Waste Strategy, which outlines plans for the borough’s recycling and refuse services for the next 20 years, was approved at the council’s cabinet meeting on Monday 22nd November 2010.

Amongst other plans, the strategy includes the following:

· A Waste Prevention Plan, with several new initiatives

· Making recycling compulsory for all households

· Measures to improve recycling provision for residents living in flats

· Introduction of an opt-in, borough-wide scheduled garden waste collection service with an annual subscription fee

· Introduction of a charge for bulky waste collections

· Introduction of the Recyclebank incentive scheme for households on estate collection rounds.

If you would like to feature further information about the new strategy in your newsletter, website or blog, please contact me on cbourke2@lambeth.gov.uk.

I will be happy to provide you with copy for a general article, information on any aspect of the strategy that you feel may be of interest to your readers, or answer any general questions you may have.

  1. Arrgh I'm even angrier. So now they are going to charge twice for the same service and we are supposed to be delighted judging by the tone of this infuriating and insulting email. Hello to even worse fly tipping and to be told this will lead to improvements in the environment is an insult to our intelligence. flytipping broken windows and graffitti etc have been shown to promote crime and reduce community cohesion and decrease the quality of life for everyone. Who voted for this stupidity? I won't be voting for them again and I will make sure my neighbours know who is responsible for the increased fly tipping that results in this short sighted policy.
