Last chance to sign Wheatsheaf petition

If you want to sign the petition objecting to the crazily late licence being sought by the Wheatsheaf, this weekend is your last chance.

The Wheatsheaf pub has been taken over by the Brazilian restaurant/bar Tia Maria which used to be in Victoria Mansions.

We wish them every success in their new home but many residents are concerned about their late night aspirations which include:
  • Serving alcohol between 10am and 2.30am (4am Fri/Sat/Sun and 5am on New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, Christmas Eve and Boxing Day).
  • Being open to public from 10am to 3am (4.30am Fri/Sat/Sun).
  • Hosting live music between 10am and 2am (4am Fri/Sat/Sun).
The petition opposes the licence application on the grounds of the prevention of crime and disorder, public safety and the prevention of public nuisance. Specifically:
  • The noise and nuisance caused by people coming and going (drunkenly) until the early hours of the morning.
  • The creeping of the late night culture from the railway arches of Vauxhall into the residential areas of the South Lambeth Road turning the area into a 24 hour party zone, pub by pub and cafe-bar by cafe-bar (& there are many).
  • The lateness of this licence attracting customers from outside the area who have no stake in an environment .
If you would like to sign the petition, please email andreworange [at] gmail.com

If you would prefer to make your own representation to Lambeth Licensing you can find out how to do it here. The last date for representations is 24 November 2010.

  1. Something that struck me while out talking to people about the Wheatsheaf license this weekend was how unhappy people already are with The Red Lion and Machico.

  2. As yet, the application is not on the agenda for the 7-December Licensing Sub-Committee meeting (http://www.lambeth.gov.uk/moderngov/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=116&MId=7278). Perhaps it will be on the 21st, which could bode ill for attendance. Watch this space.
