Vauxhall Cross island site consultation

As every other local blog has mentioned, developer, Kylun Ltd has acquired the Vauxhall Cross island site and is holding a public exhibition on its proposals for this new mixed-use scheme

Where: Classroom at Vauxhall City Farm, 165 Tyers Street, London SE11 5HS

When: Friday 21 May – 2pm to 8pm and Saturday 22 May – 10am to 3pm

Apparently: "Comprehensive information on the plans will be available at the exhibition, along with feedback forms for those attending to record their comments. Members of the development team will be available to talk you through the plans and answer any queries."

I did a Google search for Kylun but only came up with this Marvel Comics character. Thought I may as well include a picture of him as it makes a change from pictures of overflowing bins.

The picture below shows the proposal for the site from three years' ago but presumably there is something completely new about to be proposed (the new towers are certainly smaller than these). This pic is useful to get an idea of where they would sit.

I quite like the idea actually. Better than advertising billboards which are my new environmental bete noir.

I agree - anything would be better than the billboards. I guess that local groups deeply in love with the past will try to stop it just for sake of stopping it. I will check it and support it if any good.

Andrew - it seems that Squire & Partners have been appointed by Kylun Ltd as architect. This company was in charge of the previous proposal (as shown on your image) so I guess that we will be looking at some update of the existing design or something similar based on the same architectural principles.

The previous proposal had a big part presented as a social housing as per request from the local council.

It is such a different approach between Wandsworth and Lambeth councils. Wandsworth is trying to invest in 1st class facilities in premium locations (US embassy, Covent Garden, Battersea..) and Lambeth is trying to create largest ghetto in London :)

  4. I would support if it makes the environment of the bus station more hospitable. Its not a huge site so its got to be pretty intimately connected with it.

For me the main appeal of all of these developments is that the developers might be financially motivated to do a bit of tidying up around the place.

For example, the rail bridge on wandsworth road has had a water leak and large puddles undeneath for years, as well as a big pigeon problem. I'm hoping that the sky garden people will want to make it more hospitable to sell their flats.

  5. I like the idea of the site being developed into something other than commercial hoardings (though - could they not end up tacked onto the side of the new building?!?). It's bound to includ some commercial space at ground level which will improve the environment around the bus station.

    But..

    1) I'm downright frightented by the lack of plans to add capacity to Vauxhall's public transport, which is already groaning under its load.

    2) Wouldn't it have been wise for the council to reserve that land for eventual expansion of the bus/tube/rail station?

    3) How on earth will they fit a building on such a small sliver of a traffic-island of a plot? There certainly won't be any green space. And what will they do if there's a fire alarm - send people flooding into four lanes of traffic? For the developers to determine, I suppose.
