I hadn't even gotten around to trying the bread since the renovation. Too bad.
How is it possible that so many identical, mediocre tapas+karaoke bars and off-license shops have enough custom to stay in business, yet not one bakery can survive and the pubs are in trouble? I often moan about the lack of diversity in our local shops, but what sort of businesses do you think the neighbourhood would actually support?
You got me there, Matt. The economics of the South Lambeth Road defy explanation.
As you say, it's a shame we can't support a bakery. We used to have a hardware shop which was rather handy. Thanks goodness we still have a pharmacy and a dry cleaners.
Also be happy it is in Wilcox road and not just around the corner.
ReplyDeleteI liked their bread too!

maybe having a big sainsburys so close by draws away demand for specialists.
ReplyDeleteactually i'd quite like a smaller sainsburys/ tesco even closer by too - perhaps in the place of one of the special brew vendors.
