More Rubbish

How is it that this bit of pavement, built by and for the good taxpayers of Lambeth, has been taken over for the sole, private, disgusting, use of a few corner stores and restaurants?

After a fifth commercial bin turning up at the corner inspired a flurry of communication with Streetcare (not to mention apoplectic fits), we seem to have won some slight attention from a Streetcare supervisor. No action, mind you, but still.

If you have feelings about the rubbish at the corner of Tradescant Road and South Lambeth Road, please write streetcarecallcentre@lambeth.gov.uk to let them know.

    Dear Sir Madam

    Street Care Lambeth

I am at my wits end at the state of Tradescant Road where it meets the south Lambeth Road closest to the Tait library. There are so many commercial bins for the use of the restaurants on South Lambeth Road that are parked in Tradescant Road. They have been multiplying and multiplying and this has been an ongoing problem for a long time but has got worse again recently and is currently intolerable and a health hazard. I have lived in the street for 9 years and know that when there are more than 4 commercial bins, then flytipping starts and the street is always a mess. I have met with your officials before and agreements have been made to restrict the number of bins and to ensure they are collected regularly. Then it creeps up. The commercial premises that hire the bins do not pay for them to be emptied regularly enough and often stack rubbish next to them or overfill the bins. The rubbish blows down the street and the whole street is a mess. I shouldn't have to live in a rubbish dump. My neighbors and I try to have some pride in our street. But you as an organisation seem completely unable to solve this problem.

One of the bins has been over-full since Wednesday (it is now Saturday) rubbish surrounds it and is all over the street. Sometimes if the restaurants do not close their bins fly tipper then use them.

I am begging you to do something about it. My neighbors and I consider the situation to be urgent as summer is here and the restaurants are more heavily patronised. We pay our council tax and deserve a decent service, it is about time that Street Care lambeth and our councillors made an agreement with the restaurants to stop the misery caused to the local residents.

I would appreciate a meeting with your representative My phone number is xxx and my address is as below.

    Sincerely

    David Reid

  3. Thank you so much for speaking up, your letter will definitely help advance our case to clean up the road. Sadly, as of this morning, we now have SIX commercial bins on Tradescant Road.

Something is wrong when you need planning permission to so much as change the color of your front door, but people can fill the street with bins and the council looks the other way.

Just recieved an email from Nick Halpin the Customer Service Advisor (Environment) in response to my email on the weekend. It reads

    Dear Mr Reid

Thank you for your email. We are aware of the problems on Tradescant Road as you describe and currently a member of our enforcement team is conducting an appropriate investigation. We fully expect the matter to be resolved soon. Regards Nick Halpin

I have rung and asked to speak to Mr Halpin because I would be very suprised if the matter is resolved soon given that it has not been resolved in the 9 years I have been living in Tradescant Road. I also would like to know what the investigation will entail and when/if they will be speaking to the residents about it. I will let you know when I get more information. I am hoping to speak to our councillors about it and to ask for their help. David Reid

  5. I wrote to Street Care about ten days ago I got the following email from Mr Halpin:

I have made a request for the StreetCare Warden for the area to make an inspection of the site. He will then take any further action required. Our reference number is 493372.

Thank you for reporting this matter to us. If you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail or on 020 7926 9000.
It was still an appalling mess yesterday. I have been writing to StreetCare and various councillors about this problem for years and years.

    Rob

  6. Thank you all for your efforts. I have also been independently filling in the online fly tipping complaint form on the Lambeth Council website. It appears that all your efforts have led to a tidier end of the street tonight. But one of the commercial bins appears to have been moved down the road and hidden round the corner outside number 20. If you are in touch with the council again, can you please mention this. I will do the same.
