Thanks to Stockwell News for pointing out this article in the East London advertiser which lists the most air-polluted roads in London (or, at least, the most air-polluted of the 47 roads where pollution is measured).The Brixton Road comes out top but Vauxhall Cross is in the top 10.
The EU Air Quality Directive which came in on June 11 requires reduced exposure to nitrogen dioxide in urban areas, with a limit of 40 ug/m3 (micrograms per cubic metre) to be achieved by January 2010.
Vauxhall Cross pollution is currently more than double that limit at 85 ug/m3.
Even so, it has a long way to go to catch up with the Brixton Road which boasts an incredible 221 ug/m3. Brixton - it's brilliant on so many levels, isn't it?

8. WALLINGTON: A23 Purley-way, 79 ug/m3
9. SWISS COTTAGE: A41 Finchley-road, 77 ug/m3
10. CHISWICK: High-road, 73 ug/m3

* implementation of cycle lanes
* introduction of parking restrictions
* extension of cycle parking facilities.
There are also activities around raising awareness and encouraging residents and visitors to the borough to use more sustainable modes of transport. The Travel without Polluting campaign is an example of this."
Hmmm, not very reassuring.
