A sad goodbye to Di Lieto, bakers and purveyors of fine breads and a delicious delicatessen delights. Terribly sad to see you go.
Oh well, I suppose we can look forward to even more consumer choice when it comes to Portuguese coffee houses.

I only discovered this yesterday when I approached to see a sign advertising Polish food in the window. Does anyone know what happened? I bought bread (it's still baked on the premises) but it's literally half the loaf it used to be. I'm gutted - Why, why, why?
ReplyDeleteHi there,
ReplyDeleteOriginal Di Lieto moved to other premises somewhere near Brixton Road (as far as I aknowledged from fellow visitor at Estrela cafe)
That is good news for Di Lieto as I was worried that they were closing it down for financial reasons or similar.
I had a chat with new owner on my way to work - his plan was to keep italian feel to the shop with more variety of continental food. No Italian background - but keen to keep it that way. (I guess the owner is related somehow to the guys at Chicago Pizza)
Similar story again and again.
Henry (near the Oval station) sold his italian deli 3years ago before retirement and the new owner is struggling to keep italian feel to it.
There are no Poles involved - it is just the fact that polish food is sold everywhere these days. Polish meat is very tasty as well. It is not as Prosciutto however.

ReplyDeleteI found out when I went to buy some coffee and bread that the whole family moved back to Italy, except for one of the sons who has opened a smaller shop in a square somewhere near Vauxhall cross. At least this is what the two Polish girls working at the shop told me. I am so gutted too! It's a different shop altogether now, it's almost like an off-licence filled with booze on one wall and the odd continental product. The bread, well, it's not Italian I'm afraid. I tried Toni deli down the road, but alas is not Italian either but Portuguese with some Italian products in it. If anyone knows where the last of the di Lietos is near Vauxhall, pls let us all know.
ReplyDeleteBonnington Square is the location of the shop (Italo or something similar)
ReplyDeleteJust to say that Luigi Di Lieto, formerly of the Di Lieto family bakery on the South Lambeth Road, is back.
ReplyDeleteAnd so is his brother Giovanni.
Luigi is running ITALO, a delightful new Italian deli in Bonnington Square.
ITALO is on the corner with Vauxhall Grove at 13 Bonnington Square SW8 1TE (map) (07590 609 590).
The deli is open from 9.30 am to 8.30 pm Monday to Friday and 9.30 am to 6 pm on Saturdays.
As well as coffee (Espressos 90p), Luigi’s doing sandwiches and takeaways: on the day we looked in, you could have Penne alla Matriciana, Parmigiana alla Melanzane and (for vegetarians) Rigatoni alle Melanzane.
Luigi’s brother Giovanni is helping out at ITALO’s for a while, and if one piece of good news isn’t enough, he is preparing to reopen the family bakery early in the New Year.
This time, the Di Lieto bakery will be at the junction of Brixton Road and South Island Place.
Giovanni and alex di lieto have just been granted planning permission to open their new bakery at 66a brixton road.
ReplyDeleteThis has just come as good news after fighting lambeth planners for 11 months!!!!!
The bakery should be opening around the end of may !!!!!
Hooray!!!!
