Coming up at Tate South Lambeth Library...

The library forum

The next session of the Tate South Lambeth Library public forum will be held at the library on Saturday October 12th 2013 at 2-4pm.

This is the face-to-face meeting of library managers and local people, held every three months, where the library’s plans are set out and its performance is held up to scrutiny by the general public.

The October 12th meeting will provide up-to-date information on:
  • The planned restructuring of library staff
  • Spending so far on this year’s budget
  • The items to be bought for TSL from Section 106 funds (money that developers pay for projects to benefit the local community)
  • New activities at the library
  • Work on the building – recent and planned
This is the opportunity for any member of the general public to raise questions, present complaints, challenge library policy and priorities, and put forward proposals.

Everyone is invited.

Wednesday October 16th 7pm (doors open 6.30pm)

An impassioned documentary by Ken Loach about how the spirit of unity which buoyed Britain during the war years carried through to create a vision of a fairer, united society – including setting up the National Health Service, providing council housing and extending education opportunities. Is all this now under threat?

Loach's film is particularly relevant in the context of recent government cuts and is a call-to-arms to defend the social welfare institutions that have improved the lives of millions.

Vauxhall Gardens – a talk by Dr Alan Borg
Tuesday November 26th 2013 7pm (doors open 6.30pm)

From the end of the 18th century until it closed in 1859, Vauxhall Gardens were London's most famous pleasure gardens, offering food, noise, culture and debauchery to anyone who could afford the (modest) entry fee.

In A History of Vauxhall Gardens David Coke and Alan Borg have chronicled with wit and learning the raucous history of a place central to the social and literary history of Georgian London.

Dr Alan Borg CBE, FSA was trained as a historian and art historian and is a former Director of the Imperial War Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum.

Wednesday November 20th 2013 7pm (doors open 6.30pm)

As part of the First World War centenary commemoration, the Remembrance Image Project is photographing wartime sites as they appear 100 years on, and using these images to foster understanding and debate about the war, and about the role of remembrance.

Lambeth-based photographer Simon Gregor is leading the project, and has been travelling extensively in France and Belgium as well as in the UK to research the project. He will be sharing a number of the images created during the research phase, in preparation for the project’s main activity in 2014-18.

Simon has previously exhibited photographic work in both London and Hertfordshire. The Remembrance Image Project is part of the Imperial War Museum’s Centenary Partnership. More information at www.riproject.wordpress.com

Duration 50 minutes, followed by question and answer session.
