In praise of Tate South Lambeth Library

When I am King or Mayor or Councillor one of the first things I shall do is get the original porch and caryatids restored on the Tate South Lambeth Library (as seen in the c.1885 picture here).

But until that time I shall content myself with continuing to make jolly good use of the library and joining the Friends of Tate South Lambeth Library when I find out how (the internet is curiously mute on the topic).

One way you could join if you're around on Monday 24th January (sadly I am not) would be to attend the FOTSLL Burns night celebrations. There is more info on the Viva Vauxhall website which has also helpfully loaded the latest FOTSLL newsletter.

If you're not a regular user of the library it's probably time to start - what with all the cuts coming and Dave Cameron's "Big Society" we shall all probably be asked just to lend each other books in the future.

I love having the library on the doorstep. It may not have much in stock but you can order books (and renew them) online and the staff telephone you to let you know when your book is ready for collection. You can also pick up extra orange recycling bags while you are there.

And before you object, nine-to-fivers can pick up books on Thursday evenings (when the library is open until 8pm) and on Saturdays.

  1. Yes, indeed. It is a wonderful building. We are blessed with a few unusual Victorian brick buildings in the area that receive little attention. The places of worship now occupied by the Assembly of God, on Wheatsheaf Lane, and the Church of God in Christ on Fentiman Road are both very notable, applying far from standard forms to buildings of that date and purpose. A little further flung and the Springfield Methodist Chapel - which compares interestingly with the Whitechapel art Gallery in the East End - is also rather interesting.
