Plans for Tradescant Road: 1880

This map comes from a book about the Tradescants (I can't now remember which so apologies for the lack of acknowledgement) and shows an early plan for how Tradescant Road would be built over the gardens of Turret House. At this stage there seems to have been no plan for Walberswick Road.

I don't know how similar the final layout of the road was but it does give an idea of where the street lies in relation to the house and various aspects of the gardens.

The caption reads:
The Tradescants' garden in Lambeth as it was in 1880. Their home, then called Turret House, was demolished the following year and the land broken up for development. Of the suggested roads, one was named Tradescant Road, another Walberswick Street in memory of the family's Suffolk relatives, Thomas and robert Tradescant to whom John the younger left legacies.

  1. The picture at the top of the blog looks like it comes from the old painted 'Tradescant Road' sign on the side of my house on the corner of St Stephen's Terrace. I've always thought my house was built around 1900 but it looks like it was already built in 1880 doesn't it?

  2. Hi Rob. Yes, indeed, that IS the sign on the side of your house.

It does look as though the building (or a building) was already there in 1880. Do you know what it was originally used for? It doesn't look quite like a house.

One of the things on my list for 2010 is to go to the Lambeth archives and find out more about the history of Tradescant Road so I'll be sure to look out for things pertaining to your house too.
