Tradescant Road put forward an unofficial, unelected and hastily assembled ad-hoc team to The Wheatsheaf's regular pub quiz on Thursday just to give it a whirl.
The Wheatsheaf (which I'm supporting ardently due to its lack of TV screens generally and football in particular) was buzzing with atmosphere, the wandering quiz-master (he has a radio mic) was most affable and much fun was had by all. We didn't notice anyone cheating with their mobile phones either.
If any other streets would like to field a team at a future event perhaps we could introduce a local league.
The Wheatsheaf quiz night is on Thursdays and it starts somewhere between 8pm and 8.30pm. 126 South Lambeth Road, SW8 1RB.
On other pub-related news, the Royal Albert has closed which is a bit sad although it never really recovered after losing its garden which was a fantastic asset for the area in the summer months. The Wheatsheaf has a small yard but I can't think of anywhere local with a decent garden now apart form the The Fentiman Arms.
That's a shame about the Royal Albert - I thought they were really trying lately, with creative ideas like "sing for your supper" open mic nights. Will definitely have to give the Wheatsheaf a try now.
ReplyDeleteYou can still enjoy Sing For Your Supper - it has moved to the Canton Arms.

I'm a huge advocate of the Tuesday night quiz at the Vauxhall Griffin (well, I'm a huge advocate of the Vauxhall Griffin, full stop) - great banter, good fun, really cosy pub - although the prizes are always a bit tenuous (one of the few quizzes where you could 'win' and still come away with nothing, thanks to the whole "guess which balloon the prize is in" malarkey). I've always found the Wheatsheaf and the Canton Arms to be a bit... lacking in a certain je ne sais quoi.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I haven't popped in to the Wheatsheaf since they re-opened, so will need to give them another try. If they market themselves right, they should do a good trade from the Comfort Inn.
Very open to trying the Griffin's quiz too. I've only been there once and it all seemed rather low-rent and chaotic so I never went back. Perhaps it's a bit more polished these days?
ReplyDeleteDo people actually stay at the Comfort Inn? I rarely see any lights on in the bedrooms.
Mark, I'd definitely give the Wheatsheaf another try. In addition to the quieter atmosphere, they have excellent food - a great burger and a huge, reasonably-priced Sunday roast. They can't beat the Griffin for cozy ambiance, but their food really is good, far better than the Canton Arms.
