Beaufoy's Vinegar Factory

Just come across the Museum of Garden History's history of Lambeth site which includes this illustration of Beaufoy's Vinegar Factory, Cuper's Gardens, from 1746. This pic on the left is an ad for Field's Nightlights whose factory was on Upper Marsh.

The factory moved from Cuper's Gardens to South Lambeth in 1812. Part of it is that posh housing development with the clock tower behind Travis Perkins.

I didn't realise that the Comfort Inn hotel (formerly Paul Robeson House) on South Lambeth Road was originally an office building for Sarsons Vinegar, which took over from the Beaufoy Vinegar Factory.

Cuper's Gardens is now the approach to Waterloo Bridge.

  1. My husband is trying to find out the name of his family's fish and chip shop which his Aunt & Uncle owned just after the war in Beaufoy Road, Clapham. His mother came over from Italy and stayed with them too. He also doesn't remember the Aunt and Uncles names. Can you help us find them or can you suggest where we might look please. In local history on the web its just referred to as the Fish and Chip shop in Beaufoy Road, Clapham. Many thanks. Jane
